Welcome to the web site of
the 8th Conference of the International Sports Engineering Association
in Vienna 12-16 July, 2010
My predecessor, Mont Hubbard provides an excellent foreword to the conference and I echo his welcome. The ISEA is going from strength to strength and it now my turn to take the baton. In doing so I must give credit to Mont for being instrumental in recognising the growth of the ISEA and the need to review its structure and activities. He has established a firm basis for our continued operation. The biennial conference is central to ISEA and we look forward to an event that at least matches the excellent quality of the Biarritz conference. One of the features of the ISEA biennial conference is the attendance of so many young researchers; their engagement in the extra curricular sports activities is a notable feature of the conferences; long may it continue.
Sports Engineering is in an academic sense a new and emerging discipline often viewed with some scepticism by the authorities but one only has to look through the conference proceedings to realise that it is rapidly becoming a mature sub-discipline of engineering embodying much academic rigour and new technology. However, to create an environment of research funding opportunities we need to do all we can to ensure that the quality of research is kept high and that it has perceived benefits to our industrial economies as well as sports participants whether it be in the short or long term.
Mont has mentioned the other important part of the ISEA, the Journal of Sports Engineering. This is now competing with several other related journals that have recently appeared but I hope that delegates to the conference will seek to have their on-going work published in the ISEA journal. Many of the conference papers represent initial studies and I hope that authors of those papers will in due course consider submitting fuller papers on their work to the ISEA journal.
Membership of the ISEA brings other benefits apart from the journal. Access to a very extensive database of research information is available to members together with a discussion list. You can join the ISEA at any time but please note the preferential terms available when you couple membership application with your conference registration.
